Northern Lights Teaching Internship Programme

Get teaching experience with an internship

A teaching internship can help you to understand what it’s really like in the classroom. They’re available for university students with an interest in teaching who are either in their second, third or final year of an undergraduate degree, or studying towards a master’s degree.

Internships last 3 weeks, start in June or July and you’ll be paid £455 per week. Placements are limited, so you should apply early to make sure you get an internship.

Once you’ve finished your internship, you can decide if you want to train to teach in England and get qualified teacher status (QTS). As an ITT provider, we can support you with your application and next steps into teaching!

You’ll need to be studying for a related undergraduate or master’s degree and interested in teaching one of the following:

  • chemistry
  • computing
  • design and technology
  • languages
  • maths
  • physics

What does the internship involve?

You’ll get a feel for what life as a teacher is like. Your internship will give you an opportunity to:

  • shadow experienced teachers and observe lessons
  • jointly plan and teach lessons
  • get one-to-one guidance from outstanding classroom teachers and subject specialists
  • see what school life is like for a teacher outside of the classroom

All interns who complete the Northern Lights Teaching Internship will receive:

  • An introduction to our Trust and the Academies within it
  • An introduction to safeguarding training
  • Subject specific development from a subject specialist
  • High quality mentoring
  • Opportunities to work with pupils within chosen subject
  • Access to support from the Northern Lights Teaching School Hub team should you decide to apply for initial teacher training
Interns will also receive a payment of £1,365 (£445 per week)

Application Deadline: Friday 15th May 2026
