Welcome

I am extremely proud to welcome you to Northern Lights Teaching School Hub, the Teaching School Hub for Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside.

As one of the Department for Education's 87 designated Hubs, we are dedicated to supporting teachers at every stage of their careers. We act as the centre of excellence to signpost and support schools in accessing professional development, from ITT to Executive Leadership.

I am privileged to work with a fantastic team that shares the same mission: to offer ‘the best professional development for schools to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people’.

Children are at the heart of everything we do, because it’s through our work that young people can flourish.

It is an honour to lead the Northern Lights Teaching School Hub and a real privilege to build partnerships with schools across the region to ensure professional development opportunities are accessible to all.

Zoe Thompson
Director of Teaching School Hub

What is a Teaching School Hub?

The Teaching School Hub programme is a DfE strategy dedicated to supporting teachers throughout their teaching careers.

Teaching School Hubs are centres of excellence in professional development for the education workforce. The DfE has designated a network of 87 centres of excellence for teacher training and development across the country. This replaces the previous network of around 750 teaching schools, which ended in August 2021.

We act as the ‘hub’ for the whole region, signposting schools, teachers, leaders and prospective teachers to professional development opportunities. This includes every stage of professional development, from training to become a qualified teacher to executive leadership.

The Teaching School Hub works with all schools, including Early Years, Primary, Secondary, Specialist and Alternative Provision, and all school contexts, including faith schools.
